Overview

Meta Ray-Ban Display is designed to help you look up and stay present. With a quick glance at the in-lens display you can check messages, preview photos, see live translations and get help from Meta AI, all without pulling out your phone. It isn't about strapping a phone to your face; it's about accomplishing everyday tasks without breaking your flow.

I worked on the on-glasses interface and the prototypes behind it, designing for a display that lives off to the side, appears only for short interactions, and is driven not by touch but by the subtle muscle signals the Meta Neural Band reads from your wrist.

A new way to interact: EMG at the wrist

Every new computing platform brings a new way to interact. The Meta Neural Band replaces touchscreens, buttons and dials with a sensor on your wrist, so you can silently scroll, click and, in the near future, write out messages using subtle finger movements. It's the product of surface-EMG research with nearly 200,000 participants, tuned to work right out of the box across the huge variance in people's muscles.

Designing UI for an input this quiet and this precise, signals detectable before movement is even visible, meant rethinking every gesture, from a thumb swipe through steps to a wrist rotation that turns the volume like a dial.

Scroll, pinch, swipe and rotate, intuitive commands from subtle hand movements, no touching the glasses or reaching for a phone.

Built for everyone

Muscle signals at the wrist offer control for people who can't produce large movements, an accessibility breakthrough as much as an interaction one.

Made to wear all day

Up to 18 hours of battery, an IPX7 water rating, and Vectran, the material used on the Mars Rover's crash pads, strong as steel yet soft to the touch.

Designing for a display that disappears

The hardest constraint was restraint. The display had to earn every moment it appeared, surfacing a message, a map, a translation, then get out of the way. Prototyping let us feel the timing of those appearances, the legibility of the in-lens UI, and how a swipe or pinch from the band should map to what's on screen.

It's the first product to bring microphones, speakers, cameras and a full-color display together with compute and AI in a single stylish, comfortable device, the start of the next chapter for wearable computing.
